What We Believe
(And Actually Practice)
At True North Comp, our values aren’t just fancy words on our office wall—they’re the principles that guide every recommendation we make, every solution we design, and every interaction we have. These are the beliefs we live by, even when no one’s watching.
Be Real
We believe authenticity beats perfection every time. We bring our full, honest selves to work and create spaces where others can do the same. No corporate masks, no pretending to be something we’re not.
This means we’ll tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. We’ll admit when we don’t know something (and then go figure it out). We value workplaces where people can speak truth without fear—starting with our own.
Keep It Simple
If it takes a 50-page manual to explain your compensation process, something’s gone terribly wrong. We believe in the power of simplicity—clear language, intuitive systems, and straightforward solutions.
This doesn’t mean we oversimplify complex challenges. It means we cut through unnecessary complexity to find the core issues that actually matter. We’re allergic to jargon, suspicious of bloated processes, and committed to making compensation as straightforward as possible.
Honor Both Business and Human Needs
We reject the false choice between being “business-focused” or “people-focused.” The best compensation solutions serve both masters by recognizing that treating people well IS good business.
We bring the analytical rigor to connect compensation initiatives to business outcomes AND the emotional intelligence to understand human motivation. Our solutions consider both the spreadsheet and the human spirit.
Support the Underestimated
We have a special place in our hearts for those who’ve been overlooked, underheard, or made to feel they don’t belong. We believe diverse perspectives lead to better decisions, and inclusive environments lead to better performance.
This means we design compensation systems that work for everyone, not just the dominant group. We help organizations recognize and remove barriers that prevent people from contributing their best work. We believe talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t—yet.
Seek Understanding Before Solutions
We listen first, diagnose second, and solve third. We believe most compensation problems aren’t actually what they first appear to be, and rushing to solutions without understanding the root causes leads to band-aids, not healing.
This means we ask a lot of questions. We look beneath surface issues to find patterns. We consider context and culture before proposing changes. We believe in the power of diagnosis before prescription.
Stay Curious
The workplace is constantly evolving, and so are we. We believe in continuous learning, questioning assumptions, and being open to better approaches.
This means we’re not wedded to doing things the way they’ve always been done. We read widely, experiment openly, and share what we learn. We believe compensation should evolve alongside changing workplaces.
Be Cool
Our unofficial motto that underlies everything else: Stay calm. Don’t make things more complicated than they need to be. Trust that things will work out if you focus on what truly matters.
This doesn’t mean we don’t take problems seriously—we absolutely do. It means we approach challenges with a grounded perspective that comes from having seen (and solved) just about everything that can happen in a workplace. We believe panic rarely leads to good decisions, but cool heads lead to clear thinking.
